Out come for 2009
The out come of this experiment shows that all the plants have flourished. The tomatoes have now begun to bud they look strong and healthy although I would say the better way to plant would be in bottomless pots then into grow bags as these seem to be slightly more forward than the others, they have a very strong thick stem and hold themselves well.
As for the runners this would seem to be in the green house but either in pots or grow bags as both methods seem to work just as well. Both experiments are now in flower and bud.
Garden Plot 1
It has been a case of trial and error with this venture, merely keeping the dogs and ducks out has been a great effort.
All was planted up nicely with beetroot, carrots, cabbage, and sprouts until I found the ducks in pulling some of the plants up and catching the dogs playing in the middle.
Extra height was added to the sides by Kris ( my hubby) and the gaps between the posts were netted. Although the netting eventually succumbed to the duck beaks as they tried to peck through it. Percy is obviously an expert at this as the beetroot lacking leaves shows. Another deterrent for both ducks and dogs was the growth of potatoes along one end of the plot. These have now grown to a fair height and are strong and healthy. The ducks do not peck this plant at all neither do they peck the onions.
After the spoilt planting, as I said potatoes were added in two different time stages and onions.
As plot 2 was added we also added larger fencing to segregate both plots from the ducks. The fence is at a distance to enable me to walk round both plots this also gives enough distance to stop the ducks reaching through.
Plot 2
Provision for plot 2 has begun, the posts have been laid out and it has been netted in. The sides are to have the addition of bricks to support the soil today 2009-06-25.
Hope fully this plot will be up and running by the weekend and in which case I intend to sow sprouts, runners, peas a marrow as well as a couple of tomato plants to see how they fair. In 2010 this will have the addition of more potatoes and onions as well as garlic.
Both plots have and will be fertilized with water from the duck bath which has a high proportion of duck poop in it. This has proved to be a very good fertilizer and the plants which have been fed on this have flourished.
Journal retrospective of 2009
The year as a whole went very well and my expectations were surpassed by the potatoes and courgettes and tomatoes which were harvested through the latter end of the year continuously.
Strawberries although flowered and produced fruit the harvest was extremely poor and I have to say I wont be buying any more plants for the coming year. The ones I have now I will keep on just as decoration.
I have to say I enjoyed growing the various new flowers such as the pineapple lillies. Though to some it may seem odd but I delighted in visiting the flowers daily while they were on the verge of blooming. I have kept a photographic record of each of the flowers as they progressed.
